UPDATE! Old curmudgeon edition

Hey, I seem to be on a roll. My resolution to ignore SGEP seems to be going well. Too well, actually, because now everyone else is ignoring it too…

So, here goes, a mishmash of different ideas.

Today’s post is brought to you by the Old Cur. So, read on at your peril.

I have a beef with specialized building kits– I’m looking at you, Lego. Once upon a time, I was a fan. A big fan. I had a ginormous box of blocks, and remember spending many an afternoon constructing things from a diner complete with counter and cooking area, to massive destructo ramming vehicles to destroy said diner.

I remember getting a kit from one of my uncles one birthday. It was huge, like 2000 pieces, and had big flat pieces for floors/bases, and a cool mixture of every kind of block you would need– 1 X 4, 2 X 4, 2 X 6, 1 X 8, blocks with wheels etc. Plus 2 X 2 clear blocks that were perfect for block windows, roof blocks. The kit rocked. And best of all, I could build whatever I wanted with it.

And so, last week a Lego catalog came. And as my boys oogled over all the new kits, and how many pieces some of the “special” kits had, I just grunted. Because while Lego is still the premiere building blocks of childhood, they’ve sold their soul to their marketing department. Everything in the catalog had some sort of theme– Atlantis, Star Wars, etc. And even the non-themed kits were still so specialized that they were only good for building one thing.

This isn’t new, of course. We encountered this years ago when Alex was of the Lego age. And had to have the Harry Potter kits. And he sat there with the booklet and built the castle. took him a few hours, and then he was done. And that was it. He played with it a while, then it was taken down and hardly played with again ( and never, once the instructions were lost). Every piece has a specific place. and if you dared to experiment, you would just get something odd.

And I thought maybe it was just an Alex thing– this not wanting to explore other creations. But no, the other two are the same way. :/

I’m told that if you go to a Lego store, you can get non-specialized kits, and probably the same with the website. But you know what? I’m not feeling in the mood to hunt. :P

I just sent in the last (I think/hope) of the paperwork involved in order to graduate in May. I’ll be a master of information then. Muhahaha. ;) But then I have to find a real job. *sigh*

May have some freelance work coming my way, though. Seems that wireframing class I took might come in handy after all. ;)

I’m going to try my best to both get back into the swing of daily blogging, as well as Twittering. If you’re into that, you should be happy. If not, then why are you here? ;)

I’ve found myself joining several other adults in a D&D game. It’s my first time playing D&D and not having a computer program do everything for me, so I’m a total n00b. But they seem to be fairly tolerant of my shininess and my +4 slowness of n00b.

I picked up a new hobby– making chainmail jewelry. L bought me some links for my birthday, and I’ve since made a few things, including a dice bag for my previously mentioned D&D night (Geek, I!), several necklaces and a bracelet. I’ll post pictures and more thoughts about it in another post.

Just to complete my feelings of oldness, I went out today and bought a 7 day pill container, so I can a) make sure I take my meds/vitamins everyday, and b) when I second guess whether or not I did actually take my meds, I have physical proof whether I did or not.

Now, GET OFF MY LAWN!
